Join founder Fernando Barba and his 14 member “body-band” as they celebrate their North American debut at the Harris Theater with a “Carnaval” of sound and movement.

“Barbatuques – a hybrid musical creature . . . entrances the audience with infinite musical nuance . . . clapping hands, snapping fingers and vocal effects underlined by flutes, and guitars transform the twelve virtuosos into human beatboxes . . . one does not believe their ears while the sight of their whirling dances, impregnated with Brazilian rhythms of samba and maracatu takes music-making to a new dimension.”

Barbatuques – CANCELED

Barbatuques is an extraordinary experiment in musical innovation. The brainchild of Fernando Barba in Sao Paolo, Brazil in 1996, Barbatuques is a collection of extraordinary musicians who perform numerous forms of Brazilian music imitating melodic and percussive instruments using only their bodies and voices. They have toured the world with this amazing “body percussion” technique.

“LE BARON”

There’s a certain rush to being exposed to new music and with all the right cards in hand, Le Baron is destined for musical success. After the release of only one EP, the band managed to create enough buzz to be profiled as one of Al Borde magazine’s “Indie: Para no Perder” artists

On February 1, 2007, Al Borde magazine served as the first publication to profile the band in their first international interview. The exposure of the band to the Latin alternative scene in Los Angeles helped open doors for their first possible international performance. The band has since filmed their first music video for “Inmóvil” under the direction of Stacy Perskie who has also worked with Zoé and Sub-division. The video is scheduled for release in late February and alborde.com will be among the first to provide the video to its audience.

Based on a 1940’s Los Angeles murder trial, Zoot Suit (1981) follows the various members of a Mexican-American gang, led by Henry Reyna (Daniel Valdez), as they are tried and sentenced to San Quentin for a murder they may not have committed. Miserably contemplating his life sentence, one of the young prisoners copes with his anger by inventing “El Pachuco,” a zoot suit-wearing persona full of youthful machismo and vigor, enacted by Edward James Olmos. Great music! Presented in conjunction with the Starting from Scratch lecture series.

Characterized by high voltage percussion and compelling original compositions, Chévere has performed in and around Chicago and the Midwest for 30 years. The core of the band has stayed together for over 20 years, giving the band an almost telepathic ability to interact spontaneously onstage. The band has an impressive array of virtuosic melodic soloists, and the percussion section, deeply rooted in traditional folkore and religious music from Cuba, the Carribean, and Brazil, is heavily featured on almost every tune. Las Guitarras de España

(World)

Saturday November 22, 8pm | 6:30pm doors | $25

The “Gypsy Trail Series” is a unique performance series which features a blend of music and dance that endeavors to follow the musical trail left by gypsies making their way from India to Spain. The current program features three outstanding world music ensembles: Las Guitarras de España, Gypsy Rhythm Project, and Jazzmata. This concert will feature live music and dance material from India, the Balkans, and Spain. There will also be a collaborative work to close the program.

Las Guitarras de España is a world music ensemble with a “Spanish guitar twist,” that performs a fusion of Cuban son (a relative to salsa music), rumba, R&B, Latin-jazz, blues, and African percussion with an underlying flamenco music and dance focus. Over the past seven years, Las Guitarras de Espana has consistently performed to sold-out venues in Chicago and the Midwest. The ensemble has also performed at numerous schools, concert series, and performing arts venues. Members of the ensemble have roots from Brazil, Peru, Italy, Cuba, Mexico, and Spain and they have traveled to, and performed or studied in, over 30 countries. In the fall of 2005, the ensemble, in collaboration with Clinard Dance Theatre, presented “Unraveling Rhythms” to audiences in the Midwest. The collaboration produced 17 successful performances which were highlighted by sold out shows, guest artists from India, and international praise of the work.

Saturday November 8, 8pm | 7pm doors | $20 adv, $25 door

Pigeonhole Carrie Rodriguez at your peril. Sure, she’s done a lot of duets. She plays a fiddle. (a mean one at that.) She’s recorded songs with a pleasing, folksy twang.

But don’t think you know what you’re getting. Not yet 30, and with a critically-acclaimed solo record and several well-received duet records in her wake, the classically trained singer/songwriter has just begun flexing her artistic muscles, still figuring out how far her talents will take her. If you’re looking for someone playing it safe and sticking to tried-and-true ways of music making, as the title of Rodriguez’s daring new album aptly states, SHE AIN’T ME

Bonnie Lopez
October Featured Artist

This October Bonnie Lopez (Chicago) is featured in the window exhibition LAST DANCE at the Illinois Artisans Shop, Chicago. Pieces on display in LAST DANCE are for sale.

The Illinois Artisans Shop
James R. Thompson Center,
100 W. Randolph St., 2nd Floor,

Hours are M-F 9-5 and TH 9-6.

Based on Loteria, an old game of chance played throughout Mexico, Lopez’s painting is the La Muerta (the death) card. Most like bingo with images instead of numbers, there are 54 cards, each with an image and number (La Muerta is number 14) but the number is usually ignored. These cards are also a form of folk art; each of the colorful cards has an image of popular Mexican figures. Traditionally a figure of a skeletal grim reaper, Lopez’s is well-dressed and dancing.
This exhibition precedes Dia de Los Muertos, The Day of the Dead, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd (All Saints and Souls Days) mainly in Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage living in the United States and Canada. Traditions include building private altares (altars) or ofrendas (offerings) honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, candles, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. LAST DANCE also includes a mixed media and paper mache altar. Lopez’s figurines will also be on sale in the Illinois Artisans Shop, Chicago throughout the month.
