NOCHE MEXICANA: Based on the novel by Angeles Mastretta, and set in the backdrop of Mexico’s post-revolution of the ’30s and ’40s. The film evokes the politics, love, murder and passion of the time. Story begins with the beautiful Catalina Guzmán (Ana Claudia Talancón) who marries at an early age to a much older, charismatic and cunning General Andrés Ascencio (Daniel Giménez Cacho). Dazzled by his world, Catalina escorts him on his political campaigns, observing at his side the intriguing political system to obtain social justice. She soon discovers, that by having dedicated her life to the General, she might not unearth her freedom. Manuel Rodriguez Muro: Souls Behind the Coal
Illinois Latina Chamber of Commerce Presents: El Rostro Del Carbon (Souls Behind the Coal) Photography Exhibit by Manuel Rodriguez Muro.
April 9 – 22nd
Casa De La Cultura Mestizarte
1440 W. 18th St.
The Souls Behind the Coal is a tribute to the men that risk their lives trying to provide food and shelter for their families. The daily necessities and lack of better opportunities has kept them strong. The fact is that every person that works in these coal mines are exposed to poor working and unhealthy conditions. There is no certainty that these brave men will return home to their families. Day to day the elders guide the young, looking out after each other, taking the necessary precautions to help prevent any accidents. Being buried under tons of earth or drowned inside the dug wells are only a couple of the endless possibilities that may occur inside these coal mines.
In spite of the lack of equipment, these men take the journey day by day to fulfill a work day that will provide their children with the opportunities that have not been given to them. There are many stories filled with sadness and tragedies. In most cases, it seems like the authorities don’t have anything to say or any explanation to give as to why this is happening. The individuals that have lost their lives take with them the truth behind the occurrences in these disasters.

Fandanguero/ Son Jarocho
Fandanguero/ Son Jarocho
The region South of Veracruz, Mexico is called Sotavento. In this region traditions are very much alive (reviving) specially in music. Son Jarocho is a genre that has been developing since 300 years ago. In the past 30 years was almost extinct, due to migrations from the state of Veracruz, and the stereo-typed commercialization of this style of music. Son Jarocho has been through an evolutional stage with-out forgetting the deep roots where it came from, the gypsy/spanish like guitars, the African religious drumming and the mysticism of the Mexican indigenous.
Based in Chicago, Fandanguero recreate this intense colorful performance, where audience is part of the Fandango, which means Danceable Party. The instrumentation of Fandanguero consist of the traditional acoustic instruments from that region: jarana, requinto and cajón from Peru.
Fandanguero play an important role on this revival of the Son Jarocho movement/revi-
val, since it is based in Chicago where there is very few groups playing son jarocho. Fandanguero also teaches, perf-orms and lives these traditions in a far land from where this style was born. Fandanguero also adds a little Chicago in their Son adding non traditional instruments such as electric bass, bongos and music styles from around the globe: Samba, Cuban Son, Afro-Peruvian, and Flamenco.
With a distinct style and their brilliant versatility, Fandanguero has earned the respect and support of the community, by creating at every single performance, a true festival of color and joy, that invites one’s body to dance, the mind to think and the soul to feel.

Damian Rivero – Tribute to Soda Stereo
Argentinean born and raised, Damian Rivero comes from a large musical family (his grandfather was celebrated Tango singer Edmundo Rivero) but is also a product of Argentina’s booming Latin Rock scene that has been a force in the industry since the ’80s. He performed all over Argentina with the C-Men before signing with Warner Music in the late ’90s. He has been an advocate for justice and self-determination in Latin America, and in his literary work, poetry and art are intimately linked to politics, He is the founder of Solentiname, a community where popular art and poetry flourished under his leadership in the Solentiname Islands, where he lived for more than 10 years. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, among them the Peace Price of the German Book Trade in 1980, the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award en Sherborn, MA en 1990 and was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005.
Ballet Roto, invited from the Dominican Republic, opens and closes the evening presenting two dances. Their works leave behind the constraints of a specific dance technique to give way to the gestures, sensations and feelings that motivate human movement.
Twelve Chicago Poets read their own work inspired in the poetry of Ernesto Cardenal.

Diógenes Lamarche
Self-taught Dominican visionary artist Diógenes Lamarche will be featured in the first Art & Beats show at the Wicker Well. His art fuses mandalas, sacred geometry, and transcultural symbolism with high quality mixed media. Visit CosmicSensorium.com
to get an on-screen sample of his work. Be warned – what you will see on your screen does little justice to the outstanding large format glicée prints you’ll see at the show.

Stanley G. Payne is Hilldale-Jaume Vicens Vives Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author or co-author of 21 books, most of which deal with modern Spanish history. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and corresponding member of the Real Academia Española de la Historia. In his lecture, Professor Payne will talk about how the Franco regime claimed credit for rescuing thousands of Jews during the Holocaust, but research has revealed that the primary initiative in German-controlled territory stemmed from individual Spanish diplomats. Spain served as an escape route in 1940 for thousands with transit papers, while another thousand or so Sephardic Jews could claim Spanish nationality, but individual diplomatic initiatives were largely responsible for rescuing 4-5,000 Jews in Greece and Hungary in 1943-45.

Receptions: March 26, 5 – 8 pm and March 28, 5 – 10 pm
Arceo explores ideas related to dreams and dreamlike scenes through these relief prints. These prints freely and naturally emanate from his subconscious into lose lines, and progressively evolve into more defined forms. These forms construct a free-flowing composition, which seems to facilitate the telling of a story in a dreamlike atmosphere. Arceo gives preference to figurative narratives that include stylized human and humanlike characters. His upbringing and experiences in Mexico continue to inform his art production. Arceo, a printmaker who has called Chicago home since 1979, graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985.

Film & Cocktail Reception
CLOSING NIGHT: In her third film, director Camila Loboguerrero brings us a dark comedy filmed at the majestic El Eden Hacienda in Simijaca, Colombia. The once affluent De La Concha family prepares to celebrate Christmas Eve at their estate. They are a peculiar family made of distinct characters, and all with only one thing in common: deep-rooted denial of their harsh economic reality. Bernardo, the charming and youngest of the family guards dark secrets: a clandestine love affair with sister-in-law Esmeralda, and the constant threats from Uldarico, father of his lover and a powerful politician. On Christmas Eve, each will be forced to face their sad reality while trying to deny what seems to be a disastrous emergency.

Lecture: Dolores C. Huerta
Thursday, April 23, 2009, 8:00pm
Dolores C. Huerta is the co-founder and First Vice President Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UFW). The mother of 11 children, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Huerta has played a major role in the American civil rights movement. As a founding member of the Community Service Organization (CSO,) a grass roots organization, Dolores Huerta helped battle segregation and police brutality, lead voter registration drives, push for improved public services and fight to enact new legislation. Recognizing the needs of farm workers while working for the CSO, she organized and founded the Agricultural Workers Association. She became a fearless lobbyist and succeeded in obtaining the citizenship requirements removed from pension and public assistance programs. Huerta led the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee (UFWOC) and negotiated the first UFWOC contract with the Schenley Wine Company. This was the first time in the history of the United States that a negotiating committee comprised of farm workers negotiated a collective bargaining agreement with an agricultural corporation. Speaking out against toxic pesticides threatening farm workers, consumers, and the environment, Huerta’s early UFWOC agreements required growers to stop using such dangerous pesticides as DDT and Parathyon. She lobbied, organized field strikes, directed UFW boycotts, and led farm worker campaigns for political candidates, becoming one of the UFW’s most visible spokespersons. Over 70, Dolores Huerta still works long hours for the union she co-founded and nurtured, promoting “La Causa” (the farmworkers’ cause) and women’s rights. For more than thirty years Huerta remained Cesar Chavez’s most loyal and trusted advisor.
