Reviews excerpts:
The Chicago Tribune: “Garcia’s vocals are never less than seductive, his guitar playing ever atmospheric and evocative. Garcia…ought to be considered a local treasure.” Howard Reich, Jazz critic.

The Chicago Sun-Times: “This Garcia among Garcia’s is a man of his words, and worlds, and no matter where he takes you, and no matter where you ask him to take you, you travel the byways of heart and soul. Brazil, where we have never been, rejoices. Chicago, where he now has never not been, the same. Listen, listener, and hear the freedom of horizons stretching. Lloyd Sachs, Jazz critic.

Octavio Paz. ¿Accesible, o enigmático?…
Lecture

Between conversations and silences, / tongues of rag and ash, / between the reverences, delays, / the infinite hierarchies, / the seats of tedium, / you are born, delight, high serenity. “Delight”. Octavio Paz

Octavio Paz would often contemplate with the intellect’s eye, but also with the heart’s. His fascinating journey through the sea of poetry and essay writing helped unfold in him a type of personality rarely seen, even among those disciples and erudite friends closest to him. From among the various facets of this great poet, stand out his passion for philosophical reflection, his anthropological approaches to understanding “the true nature of things”, the intertextual conversations which took him to absorb from, as well as to enrich, an aesthetic movement as vital as Surrealism was during a great part of the XX Century; and yet…Do we remain with a Paz who allows himself to be caressed in the body and soul of his poems, or with the one who philosophizes enigmatically?

The lecture will be conducted in Spanish

Film La Mallorquina

This documentary portrays the spirit, history and contradictions of Spain, the clash of tradition and modern age. In addition, the problems of today are also mentioned – precarious working conditions, globalization, and immigration.

La Mallorquina, an extremely popular establishment in the heart of Madrid, has existed since 1894. The portraits of two employees, the manager and the boss reflect – just as the site itself – the spirit, history and contradictions of Spain, the clash of tradition and modern age. At the same time, the repressed past also surfaces: the time of the civil war and dictatorship. In addition, the problems of today’s time are mentioned: precarious working conditions, globalization and immigration.

Art Exhibit by Joan Abelló

Art Exhibit by Joan Abelló

The Cervantes Institute of Chicago presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to become acquainted with the pictorial trajectory of painter Joan Abelló, Spain’s most important expressionistic colorist of the 20th century.  The importance of Abelló’s achievements, including his masterful and distinguished painting career, his founding of various museums and foundations, and his long term presidency of the Royal Circle of Art of Barcelona, was publicly acknowledged in 2003, when Abelló was awarded the Catalan Government’s medal of highest distinction. This anthological exhibition comprises paintings of all periods, movements and iconographies.  It is presented in homage to the artist, who died this past Christmas Day, one day before his 86th birthday. Prints by Rene Arceo

March 25 – June 6
Wednesday – Sunday 12 to 5 pm
Receptions: March 26, 5 – 8 pm  and March 28, 5 – 10 pm

Arceo explores ideas related to dreams and dreamlike scenes through these relief prints. These prints freely and naturally emanate from his subconscious into lose lines, and progressively evolve into more defined forms. These forms construct a free-flowing composition, which seems to facilitate the telling of a story in a dreamlike atmosphere. Arceo gives preference to figurative narratives that include stylized human and humanlike characters. His upbringing and experiences in Mexico continue to inform his art production. Arceo, a printmaker who has called Chicago home since 1979, graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985.
