Art Exhibit by Joan Abelló
The Cervantes Institute of Chicago presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to become acquainted with the pictorial trajectory of painter Joan Abelló, Spain’s most important expressionistic colorist of the 20th century. The importance of Abelló’s achievements, including his masterful and distinguished painting career, his founding of various museums and foundations, and his long term presidency of the Royal Circle of Art of Barcelona, was publicly acknowledged in 2003, when Abelló was awarded the Catalan Government’s medal of highest distinction. This anthological exhibition comprises paintings of all periods, movements and iconographies. It is presented in homage to the artist, who died this past Christmas Day, one day before his 86th birthday. Do not miss it!

Tango: Humberto Décima Workshop
Humberto is a well respected dancer and teacher from Buenos Aires on his US Tour 2009.
Humberto’s diversity as performer and teacher gives him an overall understanding of tango and its varied styles. He will bring three weeks of intensive classes focused on tango for ALL levels.
His teaching method is relaxed and accessible; he adapts the sequences to the students’ own abilities. Humberto has a detailed approach to individual needs.

Marimba Nacional de Concierto
The Old Town School and the Mayan Folkloric Organization present the Marimba Nacional de Concierto. This celebrated ensemble formed by Lester Homero Godínez Orantes in 1975 has been a driving force in the international promotion of Guatemala’s national instrument since its founding. They were recently recognized as the Best Marimba in Guatemala and have embarked on a select tour of the United States with the generous support of the government of the Republic of Guatemala. The Mayan Folkloric Organization of Chicago will provide the opening ceremony in the form of a traditional Mayan ritual blessing called ‘Toj’.

Title: A Question of Vida y Muerte
Arte y Vida Chicago and Old Town of School of Folk Music invite Chicago visual artists to submit original work for display in the Harris Gallery at 4544 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL. Exhibit will be curated by Amor Montes de Oca and Alicia Manson.
We are looking for original work that celebrates life, death, and continuum. Of special interest is work that also integrates ideas of family, community, and cultural diversity.
Submission guidelines:
Original work must not exceed 40 inches. Artists working in all traditional and non-traditional genre and media, including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, mixed media. (Sorry, no video or installation).
Please submit your artwork on our Flickr GROUP Arte y Vida Chicago for review. Submissions must be in jpg format. LIMIT 3 PIECES. Please name your jpgs using your first initial, last name and a number, starting with 1 (i.e. jsmith1.jpg, jsmith2.jpg etc). Please include the title of the piece, dimensions and medium.
Submission fee: $5 per piece. Paypal payment request will be sent upon receiving your submission.

Arceo explores ideas related to dreams and dreamlike scenes through these relief prints. These prints freely and naturally emanate from his subconscious into lose lines, and progressively evolve into more defined forms. These forms construct a free-flowing composition, which seems to facilitate the telling of a story in a dreamlike atmosphere. Arceo gives preference to figurative narratives that include stylized human and humanlike characters. His upbringing and experiences in Mexico continue to inform his art production. Arceo, a printmaker who has called Chicago home since 1979, graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985.

Miradas
Mexican Art from the Bank of America Collection is a unique survey of one of the most extensive private collections in the U.S. and Mexico and takes a close look at the paintings, prints, and photographs created over the past 80 years. The exhibition examines and celebrates work by artists on both sides of the U.S. – Mexico border, to reveal a variety of cultural aspects as they emerged in the years after the Mexican Revolution.
