La India Canela
The Dominican Republic Tourism Office in Chicago and the Viva Chicago Latin Music Festival in partnership with the Old Town School of Folk Music present an evening with the Dominican Republic’s shining star of Merengue Tipico! La India Canela is the rare female accordionist in this male-dominated genre who had to overcome obstacles in her rise to success. She is a two-time winner of the Casandra Award, the Dominican Republic’s highest prize in the arts. She is a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist with a US release, Merengue Tipico from the Dominican Republic. Merengue Tipico is a hot, traditional, fast-paced accordion-driven merengue that La India describes as “…a very warm type of music, like the Caribbean, and when I play it, even my blood gets hot.”

Influenced as much by Stereolab and Gorillaz as Aterciopelados and Julieta Venegas, Chana is an LA-based singer whose tropical sound could be described as global hip-pop. Born in New York City and reared by a party-loving Dominican family, her father’s salsa and R&B records were a sonic constant while growing up. At the age of nine, Chana and her family moved to Miami and she trained in modern dance at the “Fame”-like magnet New World School of the Arts, where she was exposed to ’90s indie acts like Unrest, My Bloody Valentine, and the Swirlies.
She continued to study dance at the University of Michigan, where she danced in works by Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Twyla Tharp, which in turn opened her ears to composers like John Cage and Phillip Glass. She then received a fellowship to Ohio State to receive her MFA in Choreography, and thanks to a university grant spent a summer researching Afro-Dominican dance and music in the Dominican Republic.
After settling in LA, Chana hooked up with producer Marthin Chan, whose previous work with Volumen Cero had earned him a Latin Grammy nomination. Working out of Chan’s garage in Echo Park, the duo began collaborating in 2005, and were aided by friend Jorge Elbrecht of the New York art collective Lansing-Dreiden. Their first batch of demos includes “No Me Mandes Flores,” which sounds like Andrea Echeverri fronting a funk band; “A Veces,” whose swampy sonics and bouncy bass give off a dub feel; and “Icaro,” a jagged, thrilling rush of pop. Chana also continues her passion for dance as an understudy for Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company (lacontemporarydance.org). She also was the choreographer for Mia Doi Todd’s video “Night of a Thousand Kisses”.

Set in the breathtaking background of the exotic Atlantic Coast of Colombia, a musically talented 11-year-old boy, Poncho, has two dreams: to get an accordion and conquer the heart of the girl of his dreams, Sara Maria. Challenged by overwhelming financial hardship, we follow Poncho, as he becomes the legend known as the Angel of the Accordion.
Alex Cuba
Alex Cuba is an outstanding Cuban musician who immersed himself in guitar, tres, percussion and bass as a teenager and went on to play bass with traditional Cuban artists recording and touring extensively. He fully discovered his extraordinary capacity as a singer/songwriter after moving to Canada. After recording an award-winning album with his twin brother (vocalist Adonis Puentes), he broke out of the Cuban mold to create a son-rock-soul style that is all his own. His releases Humo de Tabaco and Agua del Pozo both earned Juno awards for Best World Music Album and charted heavily on iTunes. Alex Cuba returns to Chicago after sold out shows in the 2008 World Music Festival and a stellar performance at the House of Blues in April.

Join us at Andy’s Jazz Club while we help promote the Chicago Jazz Festival 2009.
Showcasing the Chicago Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble. This band will be playing the Chicago Jazz Festival at 3:30pm on Saturday, September 5th on the Jazz On Jackson Stage.
The C.A.L.J.E. was formed in efforts to fuse the musical treasures of Afro-Latin American music and Jazz. Staying true to the Latin musical traditions, this group blends colors from all over the world. The band has a strong foundation in Afro-Cuban Jazz, Brazilian, and Jazz Fusion which then blends it with Flamenco, Central American and Peruvian folk rhythms.
Founded by Mexican born trumpeter/composer Victor Garcia, and Nicaraguan born pianist/composer Darwin Alejandro Noguera, these long-time musical collaborators envisioned an endeavour for Chicago that would follow in the innovative footsteps of the pioneering Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, Irakere and the Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra at Lincoln Center.
Critics are raving about this new ensemble, and the energy that transpires from them is reverberating all throughout the Chicago-land area. Noguera and Garcia have formed an explosive multi-ethnic group that serve as ambassadors of Afro-Latin Jazz, assuring the audience of an unforgettable night of musical fusion

Mexican Art from the Bank of America Collection is a unique survey of one of the most extensive private collections in the U.S. and Mexico and takes a close look at the paintings, prints, and photographs created over the past 80 years. The exhibition examines and celebrates work by artists on both sides of the U.S. – Mexico border, to reveal a variety of cultural aspects as they emerged in the years after the Mexican Revolution.
