TO REACH CHILDREN

Children are my audience of choice. They deserve to be informed, accompanied, nourished and provided with hope in the challenging moments of life. My artworks deal in a poetic way with strong and sensitive topics concerning death, adoption, child abuse, war, terminal sickness, social rejection and migration. I aspire to reach children with respect because as an adult I am aware and care about the many ugly, wrong and inexplicable events that affect them.

My current focus of study is to portray the impact of human migration on the lives of children. I am developing visual images that today’s Central American children can follow and relate to. A new reality has been shaped for our children, in consequence of civil wars, poverty and economic globalization. There has been thirty years of continuous emigration of Central Americans, mostly to the United States. I am depicting the icons and symbols that are common to the everyday life of children created by this migration such as: absence of parents, smugglers, money remittances, refurnished homes with electric appliances and youth gangs. Beyond these, I am recreating the journey to the north that Central American children have to travel before reaching the American dream. This is a journey filled with fantastic creatures, monsters, adventures, misfortunes, and of course heroes, the children.
