Carlos Varela

Cuban folk-rocker Carlos Varela is in a league of his own as a singer/songwriter. He is known for well-crafted songs that give the listener an insider’s perspective to life on the island nation of Cuba where he recently performed in front of more than a million people at the Concert for Peace. The troubadour’s insightful lyrics are offset by a mercurial voice that goes from soft and melodious to a scratchy growl depending on the song’s sentiment. While Varela remains a controversial artist in his home country of Cuba, the singer considers his current project the most coherent and musical of his career.
