Conviction

Conviction - Ami Dayan - Feb. 2011

CONVICTION, is based on a true story of faith and forbidden love in the shadows of the Spanish Inquisition. In Franco-ruled 1960’s Madrid, an Israeli scholar is detained for stealing a confidential Inquisition file. Contained within it is the true confession of Spanish priest Andrés González (1447—1486), whose faith is tested when he finds himself in love with a Jewish woman.

Written by Oren Neeman and directed by Kevin Hart.
This one-man play stars Ami Dayan.

“This is such stuff as dramas are made on. Forbidden love, outlawed religion, burnings at the stake. It’s about the persistence of faith in the face of murderous oppression, a theme with many Jewish variations. Based on a true story” -The New York Times

“The play offers an unnoticed lesson in Spanish history and Jewish spirituality, gently incorporating key terms from the Inquisition and the Kabbala. Hinging on some surprising twists and connections, the play mines a period that has not gotten much attention on the stage.” -The Jerusalem Post

“A surprisingly entertaining time-traveling mystery wrapped inside a profound love story.” -The Denver Post

“…the rich texture of the performance sticks in the memory — as with a fine novel.” -The Forward
