Drop the textbooks, and explore culture

Fall is here and that usually has many of us thinking it’s time to go back to school. But what about those of us who no longer are in school or need a quick break from the textbooks? Chicago is a great place to enrich, explore and participate in the culture all around the city. This list is only some of what Chicago has to offer, but whether it’s language courses, filmmaking or dancing, these back to school items will leave you nothing but satisfied. Make sure to always check back for classes starting in the spring, as well. Some programs have already started accepting applications!

A Taste of Salsa
Latin Street Dancing

This is a beginner salsa class which covers the basics, how to connect them, and how to lead/follow. You will also learn 3 basic turns and one sixteen turn combination. This class is perfect for those who are looking to get into salsa, or just brush up on what you know. Class schedule
Can You Hear My World?

From October 3 to December 12
This is for children ages 6 to 11 on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. The purpose of this course is to explore what Chicago is as a home. Of course it’s easy to describe the physical, such as stores, restaurants and people, but what about sound. Students will learn how to use recording equipment and Photoshop to create a soundscape that shows Pilsen through individual ears, eyes and minds. Click here for an application.

Roots of Samba: Brazilian Drums and Percussion with Heitor Garcia

Renowned Brazilian drummer Heitor Garcia will introduce students to rhythms and patterns of samba, including how the genre has evolved to modern day. There will be a drum set, tamborim, pandeiro, rebolo, cuica, agogo, congas and shakers in the workshop. Students are even encouraged to bring their own instruments used in Brazilian Music. Latin Folk Connection with Nelson Sosa
