The Guild Complex’s bilingual reading series, Palabra Pura, will feature internationally-recognized poet Rita María Martínez alongside local poet Luis Tubens.

Rita María Martínez is the author of the chapbook, Jane-in-the-Box. Her writing has been featured in Ploughshares, Diagram, and many others, including a Pushcart nomination for a poem that appeared in MiPOesias. Her writing has also been anthologized in Caña Quemada: Contemporary Cuban Poetry in English and Spanish.
Luis Tubens is a Chicago-born poet and photographer, author of the chapbook, From a Rooftop in Logan Square. He is also the host of numerous events throughout Chicago for beginning and veteran performers, and host of “The Beat Gallery,” a radio show on RadioArte,WRTE.
He is an artist-in-residence for local community art and music group, Lethal Art.
Palabra Pura features Chicano and Latino poets reading work in Spanish, English and a combination of both. The series offers Chicago’s large Spanish-speaking population, the third largest in the United States, a venue to read their poetry as originally composed and helps audiences learn more about the strong tradition of poetry in Spanish. A special emphasis is placed on poets who have recently published books or won recognition for their work.
Held the third Wednesday of every month, Palabra Pura continues its fourth year of programming.
