Exhibition: Don Qui, Homage from Matta to Don Quixote

The Instituto Cervantes of Chicago presents an exhibit of works by world-renowned Chilean Surrealist Roberto Matta entitled “Don Qui, Homage from Matta to Don Quixote.” The title of each work is influenced by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s novel The Adventures of Don Quixote de la Mancha. Matta (1911-2002), a Chilean-born artist of Basque-French parents, began his career studying architecture. In 1933, at age 21, he left his country for Paris where he worked closely with and in the tradition of Surrealists Dalí, Breton and Duchamp. In New York, where he was in exile for six years, Matta was strongly influenced by painters such as Arshile Gorky, Robert Motherwell, William Baziotes and Jackson Pollock. Since leaving New York in 1946, Matta has distanced himself from any specific movement and has worked to develop a style of his own. Please join Thomas Monahan and literary scholar Elizabeth Goizueta as they share stories of their experience of working with the artist.
