La India Canela

The Dominican Republic Tourism Office in Chicago and the Viva Chicago Latin Music Festival in partnership with the Old Town School of Folk Music present an evening with the Dominican Republic’s shining star of Merengue Tipico! La India Canela is the rare female accordionist in this male-dominated genre who had to overcome obstacles in her rise to success. She is a two-time winner of the Casandra Award, the Dominican Republic’s highest prize in the arts. She is a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist with a US release, Merengue Tipico from the Dominican Republic. Merengue Tipico is a hot, traditional, fast-paced accordion-driven merengue that La India describes as “…a very warm type of music, like the Caribbean, and when I play it, even my blood gets hot.”
