Pedrito Martinez Quartet

Pedrito Martinez Quartet
Afro-Caribbean Improvised Music Festival
December 3-10

This very hot Afro-Cuban band is led by Pedro “Pedrito” Martinez. Martinez is from Havana and has been singing and drumming professionally since his early teens with the likes of legends Tata Guines, Lazaro Roos, Merceditas Valdes, Pancho Quinto, Gregorio (El Goyo) Hernandez, Yoruba Andabo and the great Cuban group Munequitos de Matanzas. Martinez won the Thelonious Monk Competition during the first year it showcased Afro-Latin hand drumming. His sound has been featured in projects by Paquito D’Rivera and Eddie Palmieri, he was a central figure in the seminal New York band Yerba Buena, and has been featured on more than 100 recordings.
