Printpalooza

Prints aren’t reproductions of someone else’s work. They are original works of art created by artists. See how they are made and find contemporary and affordable ones to take and wear home by cutting edge printmakers and graphic artists from the Chicago area and around the country.

* Drive By Press, the design duo of Greg Nanney and Joseph Velasquez known for DIY print and apparel creation at concerts and festivals, will draw, carve, ink and print original woodcuts. You can participate in the printing process by selecting designs, colors and image placement on T-shirts Greg and Joseph will ink and press. You can purchase plain T-shirts at Printpalooza or bring your own.

* Martin Mazorra of Brooklyn’s Cannonball Press, which organizes New York’s annual Prints Gone Wild! events, will participate in printmaking demonstrations and display and offer original prints from Cannonball priced from $20 to $50.

* Artist Eric Fuertes will create prints by riding his Dumbo Press, a portable press operated like a rocking horse, show videos of his experimental print projects and display his custom-made printing equipment. You can watch a video clip of the Dumbo Press on youtube.

* Spudnik Press Cooperative has been called the best printmaking studio in Chicago. Founder and executive director Angee Lennard will have prints by Spudnik artists for sale at $20 and below and a $1-screenprint vending machine.

* Comix Revolution, an underground comic book and magazine retailer with locations in Evanston and Mount Prospect, will have one-of-a-kind publications for sale by local artists.

* DJs Chris Widman and Luke Stokes of abstract science will provide music for Printpalooza. Now in its 14th year on WLUW-FM, abstract science explores the constant evolution of modern electronic music.
