Teatro Vista’s 2011 season
Momma’s Boyz
By Cándido Tirado
Directed by Ricardo Gutierrez
- In their words:
“Momma’s Boyz is a modern-day tale about three inner city friends magically given a second chance to revisit their decision to get some quick money by selling drugs. Updated and set in Chicago for its Teatro Vista debut, the story begins at the end of their journey, with Mimic standing over the coffin containing his best friend, Shine. Mimic swears if it were possible, he would turn back time to make sure his friend doesn’t fall prey to a senseless act of violence. Funny, real, and packed with poetic energy, Momma’s Boyz rewinds back to the moment when making a different choice could magically change the course of their lives forever.”
- Our take:
Teatro Vista’s Resident Playwright Cándido Tirado partners with ensemble member Ricardo Gutierrez to bring a dark and funny take on friendship, the past, and tragic mistakes. Performed in the Chicago Dramatist’s newly revamped space near Chicago and Milwaukee, the production should be incredibly engaging, entertaining, and ultimately thought-provoking.

Fish Men
By Cándido Tirado
Directed by Edward Torres
- In their words:
“In Fish Men, a group of urban chess hustlers in New York’s Washington Square Park engage each other in spirited matches on a hot summer day, hoping to draw unsuspecting players into their high-stakes hustle. Their patience is soon rewarded by the arrival of Rey Reyes, a young student who naively agrees to their challenge. But as the game progresses, the chess tables are turned—raising the stakes and revealing the traumatic circumstances that have made them seek refuge in a game that has become their obsession. Resounding with biting humor and unexpected pathos, Fish Men focuses on a group of unforgettable, multi-ethnic, multi-generational characters drawn together by their need to overcome individual tragedies.”
- Our take:
The world premiere of a new play dealing with Hispanic issues is exciting enough, but when you pair the talents of playwright Cándido Tirado with Teatro Vista founder and director Edward Torres, this production is sure to be brilliant. Added to this potent creative collaboration is the great Goodman theatre space. Featuring Tirado’s trademark dark and incisive humor, Fish Men is definitely one to see.
